Description
Species Description - Perennial, from short rhizomes, glabrous or petioles pubescent, to 125 cm tall; rhizome to 2 cm wide. Leaves emersed, greenish-brown; blades ovate, entire, with 11-13 veins, 11-15 cm long, 11-15 cm wide, the pellucid markings forming a network independent of the veins, the apex rounded, the base cordate; petioles terete, unwinged, longer than blade, 3-5 mm diam., the base with a sheath to 10 cm long. Inflorescence racemose, of 10-12 whorls, erect, overtopping the leaves, without vegetative proliferations, to 60 cm long, to 55 cm wide, the whorls with 18-24 flowers, the rachis triangular and slightly winged between whorls; peduncles triangular, 2-10 cm long, ca. 0.4 mm wide; bracts lanceolate to subulate, coarse with hyaline margin, longer than pedicels subtended, to 15 mm long, to 4 mm wide, the apex long acuminate; pedicels spreading in flower and fruit, cylindric, to 1.5 cm long, to 0.5 mm diam. Flowers ca. 1 cm wide; sepals erect, surrounding only base of fruiting aggregate, with 10-12 veins, 0.4-0.7 cm long, to 0.4 mm wide, the veins without papillae along veins; petals without claws, ca. 0.7 mm long, ca. 0.4 mm wide; stamens ca. 18, the anthers versatile, to 1.3 mm long, the apex obtuse, the filaments to 1.5 mm long, carpels numerous. Fruit clavate, flattened, 2-4-ribbed, keeled, glandular, separating when mature, ca. 2 mm long, 1.2-1.5 mm wide, the glands 1, circular to elliptic, the beak lateral, erect, ca. 0.6 mm long.

Discussion
This species is not known to be cultivated. Pickel apparently returned to the same locality 16 years later and collected under the same number, just adding an "a" afterward. We have examined a specimen of Pickel 64a (SP), which clearly matches the protologue and believe that the specimen is a topotype.

Ceara and Pernambuco states of Brazil. Flowering and fruiting August to January; elev. not given on specimens.
