Description
Description - Plant stemless or short-caulescent, propagating by short rhizomes, flowering 1-3 dm high. Leaves 10-15 in an ellipsoid or subglobose rosette, 8-20 cm long; sheaths broadly ovate, often nearly as long as the blades, dark brown, obscurely lepidote; blades narrowly triangular, 5-12 mm wide. Scape straight or curved, very slender, usually shorter than the leaves; scape-bracts suberect, suborbicular, shorter than the internodes or about equaling them, thin, red. Inflorescence simple or rarely 2-3-branched; primary bracts scarcely larger than the floral bracts; spikes dense, 3-10-flowered; rhachis straight to flexuous, more or less ferruginous-lepidote. Floral bracts imbricate, suborbicular, acute or apiculate, to 16 mm long, equaling or more often exceeding the flowers, membranaceous, red; flowers erect or frequently secund, subsessile. Sepals asymmetric, obovate, obtuse, to 10 mm long, thin, lepidote; petals 12-15 mm long; stamens included. Capsule subcylindric, stout, 2 cm long, beaked.

Epiphytic in forest, 2700-3500 m alt, Colombia to Bolivia.
