  • Description

Species Description - Shrub or small tree, to 2 m tall. Leafy twigs and petioles densely covered with appressed and erect, crisped, pale brown, simple hairs, becoming glabrous. Petioles 3-10 mm long, 0.5-1 mm in diam. Lamina narrowly elliptic to narrowly elliptic-ovate, chartaceous, the margins thickened and revolute, dark blackish-brown, often densely verrucose above, brown below, 5-10(-12) cm long, l-2.5(-3) cm wide, rather densely to densely covered on primary vein above with erect, whitish to light brown, simple hairs to 0.5-1 mm long, otherwise glabrous above or sometimes sparsely covererd with erect, whitish hairs when young, rather densely covered below with appressed, ferruginous, simple hairs to 0.5 mm long, particularly along primary vein, becoming glabrous, base acute, apex sharply acute or shortly to long-acuminate, the tip itself acute; secondary veins (slightly) curved, 10-14 on either side of primary vein, with short intersecondaries (sometimes not clearly distinct from tertiary venation), angles with primary vein 40-60°, loops indistinct to distinct, smallest distance between loops and margin (0-)0.5-l mm, tertiary veins (3-4 per intercosta, weakly percurrent to) reticulate. Domatia absent. Inflorescences leaf-opposed or almost so, 1-3-flowered, peduncles, pedicels, outer side of bracts, outer side of sepals, rather densely covered with appressed and erect, brownish, simple hairs, wings same, but more densely so, and hairs greyish, inner side of bracts and inner side of sepals glabrous. Peduncles 0-2 mm long. Pedicels (5-) 10-25 mm long, 0.5-1 mm in diam. Bracts ca. 1 mm long, upper bract inserted in the lower to halfway the pedicel. Flowers cream-colored in vivo, brownish when dry due to indument. Sepals free, appressed, more of less broadly ovate-deltate, 2-3 mm long and wide, long-acuminate, not gibbous. Corolla tube 4-5 mm high, 5 mm in diam., wings very broadly ovate-elliptic, subhorizontal, 3-5 mm long, 4-6 mm high, 1-2 mm thick, index = ca. 1. Fruit globose to very broadly ovoid, 1-2 cm long, 1.51.8 cm in diam., blackish when dry, composed of 15-30 carpels, glabrous, areoles pulvinate, with unclear demarcations, without apicule, 5-7 mm in diam, at the base, 1-3 mm high, surface distinctly verrucose; wall ca. 0.5 mm thick. Seeds 7× 4 × 4-5 mm.

  • Discussion

Rollinia xylopiifolia can usually be distinguished easily from R. emarginata, its closest ally, by the dark (in dried condition), "Xylopia-like" leaves with revolute margins and a conspicuously hairy (pilose) primary vein on the adaxial side. The fruits look very similar to those of R. emarginata.
