  • Description

Species Description - Shrub or small tree, 1-6 m tall. Leafy twigs and petioles densely covered with ferruginous, erect to appressed, simple hairs to 0.5 mm long. Petioles 2-5 mm long, ca. 1 mm in diam. Lamina ovate to elliptic or narrowly so, 4-8(-10) cm long, 1-4 cm wide, chartaceous, dark green, grey, green, or dark brown above, pale green to brownish-green below, densely covered (hirsute) on primary vein, otherwise rather densely covered (secondary veins) with erect hairs to 0.5 mm long, to (almost) glabrous above, densely covered with white to pale brown, erect, simple hairs to 0.5 mm long below, base acute (rarely obtuse), apex acute to very shortly acuminate; secondary veins slightly curved, 6-10 on either side of primary vein, rarely with some short intersecondaries, angles with primary vein 40-70°, loop-forming usually over most of the length at acute to right (to obtuse) angles, secondary arches sometimes conspicuous, smallest distance between loops and margin (0.5-)1-2 mm, tertiary veins 2-3 per intercosta, weakly percurrent to reticulate. Domatia scarce, indistinct. Inflorescences supra-axillary to (pseudo-)axillary, 1 (-rarely 2)-flowered, pedicels, outer side of bracts and sepals, and wings of corolla densely covered with ferruginous, erect to appressed, simple hairs to 0.5 mm long, inner side of sepals glabrous. Peduncles scarsely visible. Pedicels 10-17 mm long, 0.5-1 mm in diam. Bracts ovate, 0.5-1 mm long, rather frequently wanting (upper bract or both bracts), upper bract (if present) inserted near the base at up to ca. 1/3 of the pedicel. Flowers white to yellow, inner center purple in vivo. Sepals free, patent, ovate-deltate, 3-4 mm long, 3-4 mm wide, acute, not gibbous. Corolla tube 3-4 mm high, 4-5 mm in diam., wings semicircular, horizontal to ascending, 2-3 mm long, 2-4 mm high, 1 -5-2.5 {-4} mm thick, index = 1. Fruit subglobose in outline, 2-2.5 cm in diam., apocarpous, rarely carpels connate over xh of the length, yellow-orange to orange when mature in vivo, carpels 1-6, ellipsoid to obovoid, 7-12 mm long, 4-6 mm in diam., shortly stipitate (stipe 1-2 mm long), glabrous, with obtuse to shortly apiculate apex, surface often strongly verrucose; wall less than 0.2 mm thick. Seeds 9 × 5 mm, pale, shiny brown, pitted.

  • Discussion

Rollinia parviflora is easy to recognize by the ferruginous indument on most parts, the small leaves, wings about as long as high, and apocarpous fruit. Its closest affinity is with R. ferruginea; see notes under that species and also under R. leptopetala.
