Description
Species Description - The variety luridus is closely related to variety berteroanus but differs in having mostly paired teeth on the margins of the upper lamina. Other distinctive features include the occasional presence of elongate cells forming an irregular border on the margins of the lower lamina, nearly uniform presence of teniola-like features in the lower lamina, very strongly flaring shoulders, short cancellinae, ventrally smooth supra-cancellinar cells, elongate median and upper cells of the upper lamina, and dorsally smooth costa. Sporophytes as in var. incompletus.

Discussion
Plants of the var. luridus are macroscopically similar to those of the flexuous-leaved forms of vars. berteroanus and incompletus. The var. luridus differs from var. berteroanus in having double rows of teeth along the margins of the upper lamina, rather than a single row of teeth on each margin, and differs from var. incompletus by a combination of characters including its oval to rounded-rectangular cells in the upper lamina, uniformly strongly flaring leaf shoulders, common presence of teniolae-like features, and smooth supracancellinar cells. The distinctions between var. luridus and forms of vars. incompletus and berteroanus are not always easy to distinguish. In a general way, the var. luridus can be thought of as a version of the var. berteroanus with its leaf margins doubly toothed; it is confined to northern South America.
