Description
Variety Description - The variety tenuifolius is characterized by its extremely long leaves, to ca. 5.5 cm long, often with accessory guide cells in the costa (as seen in section); the leaves are often proliferous at their tips. The median leaf cells are mostly like those of the var. scaber, but in some collections are like those of the var. prolifer. In some specimens leaves of both types may be present. Discussion
Plants of var. tenuifolius are similar in most respects to those of vars. prolifer and scaber; it is only the greatly elongate upper leaves and the accessory guide cells that distinguish them. The leaves of this moss—to 5.5 cm—rank among the longest known for any moss in the world. Leaves of Syrrhopodon loreus (Sande Lac.) Reese, of Asia and Oceania, may be up to to 6 cm long (Reese et al. 1986), which may be the record. See Orbán and Reese (1990) for a review of the S. prolifer complex.

Distribution
Tropical America; Central America, West Indies, northern South America, and disjunct to southern Brazil. Trees, stumps, logs, soil, humus in forests, mostly above 1000 m, to ca. 2300 m.
