    Species Description - Plants in yellowish green to brownish green tufts. Stems to 5 cm tall, slender, equally foliate, without tomentum. Leaves about 5 mm long, narrowly lanceolate, ending in a narrow, serrate tip. Costa filling 1/2-1/3 of the leaf base, ridged at back, excurrent, in transverse section with large ventral hyalocysts occupying 1/2 the height of the section and dorsal groups of small stereids. Alar cells hardly developed. Basal laminal cells hyaline, thin-walled, rectangular, 4-10 × 13-38 nm, not differentiated at margins. Upper laminal cells short rectangular, incrassate, 3-6 × 6-13 ca. 1:4. Sporophyte not known.

    Distribution and Ecology: On soil and tree trunks in montane forests in Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia, also disjunct in SE United States, in the Andes in evergreen rain forests between 2500 and 3000 m, in Mexico in pine-oak forests between 2000 and 2500 m and in the Appalachians between 100 and 1200 m.
