  • Discussion

Calceolaria moyobambae is a brownish-pubescent parallel species to C. tetragona, to which it is closely related (cf. C. dentifolia and C. salicifolia). The flowers and the leaves are among the largest in the section.

The epithet moyobambae is unfortunately a most misleading one. Moyobamba is a town in the department of San Martín, far to the east of the range of this species. Kränzlin picked it up from the headline of Stübel’s label, “Excurción de Pacasmayo (at the coast) a Moyobamba.” Consulting maps was obviously not one of Kränzlin’s habits.

This taxon has been much overlooked, and it was not treated by Edwin (1971) in the Flora of Peru.

  • Distribution

Endemic to the eastern Andes of N Peru in the department of Amazonas. All the collections cited below are from the Calla-Calla Range in the Chachapoyas Province just E of the canyon of the Rio Maranon. It grows in mountain scrub and elfin forest between 2800 and 3300 m.
