Description
Species Description - Plants filiform with appressed foliate slender stems, to 8 cm high, erect, yellowish green above and reddish below, tomentose at base. Fertile plants with comal tufted Perichaetia. Leaves lanceolate from an ovate base, 4-6 mm long. Costa filling 1/3(-1/2) of the leaf base, excurrent in a hyaline, serrate tip, which may be short or even lacking in shaded habitats, in transverse section with ventral hyalocysts and dorsal groups of stereids, ridged at back. Alar cells reddish, inflated or less differentiated to lacking. Basal laminal cells elongate rectangular, hyaline, thin walled, 13-22 × 26-45 µn, narrower at margins. Upper laminal cells oval to elongate oval, 3-6 x 13-19 /an, incrassate. Sporophyte not known.

Discussion
This species is identified by its filiform stems. In its stiff, filiform stems it closely resembles Pilopogon gracilis (Hooker) Bridel, which is also found in SE Brazil. Fertile specimens of Pilopogon are differentiated by the long sheathing perichaetial leaves and the straight setae. Sterile specimens can be differentiated only by the transverse section of the costa, which shows ventral stereids in Pilopogon but ventral hyalocysts in Campylopus aemulans.
Campylpus aemulans may or may not have hyaline hairtipped leaves. Epilose specimens have been described as C. setaceo-rigidus, subepilose forms as C. auribrunneus. In leaf characters such as leaf shape, basal and upper laminal cells and in its hyaline hairpoint, this species resembles C. pilifer, which differs, however, by the presence of a costal lamella at back. It resembles Campylopus julaceus in regards to its appressed foliate stems, leaf shape and hyaline basal laminal cells. Campylopus julaceus, however, has oval, incrassate upper laminal cells. -
