  • Description

    Subspecies Description - Shrub or tree. Leaves glabrous. Fruit subglabrous. Field characters. In savanna and scrub vegetation it is a shrub or small tree to ca. 10 m high, but in forest it reaches 30 m high and may be heavily buttressed; bark light brown to reddish, scaling and leaving conchoidal scars, inner bark sweet tasting, with white latex. Flowers greenish-white, fruit yellow or orange. Flowering and fruiting have been recorded throughout the year with a peak period of flowering Oct-Feb. The fruit is eaten on the tree by several species of birds and, after it has fallen to the ground, by deer and rodents (Macedo & Prance, 1978).

    The sweet fruit is, according to Spruce (1393), a noted remedy for diarrhoea in the region of Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil.

    A common species of savanna, scrub savanna, Campina and savanna woodland over shallow soils, often white sands, with rock outcrops, sometimes with poor drainage. Occasionally occurring in wallaba (Eperua) forest in the Pakaraima montane region of Guyana. Altitudinal range sea level to 1400 metres.
