Species Description - Tree, young shoots densely pubescent with long stiff golden hairs, becoming glabrous, greyish, very rough and grid-cracked, without lenticels. Stipules 1.7-3.7 cm long, lanceolate, densely hairy at first, soon subglabrous, cartilaginous or thickly membraneous, margin often ragged. Leaves densely clustered at the shoot apex, spirally arranged, 22.5-45 × 10-15 cm, broadly oblanceolate, apex acute, obtuse or rounded, base acute, coriaceous, strongly bullate, glabrous above, lower surface with a mixture of long stiff erect hairs and shorter crisped hairs on the midrib and veins, the lamina uniformly pubescent with erect two-branched hairs, venation eucamptodromous, sometimes with a marginal vein, midrib sunken on the upper surface or slightly prominent but recessed, secondary veins 20-26 pairs, parallel or slightly convergent, arcuate, slightly impressed on the upper surface; intersecondaries absent; tertiaries oblique, parallel, quaternaries at right angles to the tertiaries, numerous, parallel. Petiole 2.5-4 cm long, channelled at the apex, densely stiff-hairy. Ramiflorous, fascicles 5-15-flowered. Flowers unisexual (plant dioecious). Sepals five, 4-5 mm long, broadly ovate, apex acute to obtuse, densely golden-brown pubescent outside, glabrous inside. Corolla 4-5 mm long, tube 1-2 mm long, lobes five, ca. 3 mm long, broadly ovate, apex obtuse to rounded, glabrous. Stamens five, fixed in the upper half of the corolla tube; filaments ca. 2 mm long, glabrous; anthers ca. 1 mm long, narrowly ovate, glabrous; stamens absent in female flowers. Ovary broadly ovoid, five-locular, densely long-strigose; style 1.5-2 mm long after anthesis, glabrous; style-head minutely lobed; ovules vestigial in male flowers. Fruit 5-6 cm long, globose, apex rounded, base truncate, smooth, thick-walled, golden-brown, densely long-velutinous. Seeds several, 2.3-2.4 cm long, laterally compressed, rounded at apex and base, testa smooth, shining, 0.5-1 mm thick; scar adaxial and extending round the base of the seed, 3-5 mm wide. Field characters. Tree to 25 m high and 50 cm diam., unbuttressed, with a cylindrical bole. Bark fairly smooth, brown, soft, with abundant white latex. Fruit tawny-orange. Flowering Feb, fruiting Feb to May.
