    Species Description - Small tree, young shoots sparsely sericeous with pale or golden hairs, soon glabrous, pale brown, cracked, sometimes lenticellate. Leaves 5-15(-27) × 2-4(-9.5) cm, narrowly elliptic, oblong or lanceolate, apex narrowly attenuate, base acute to narrowly attenuate, upper surface glabrous, lower surface sparsely sericeous at first with whitish hairs, becoming subglabrous; venation eucamptodromous-brochidodromous, midrib flat or slightly sunken on the upper surface, secondary veins 7-13 pairs, parallel or slightly convergent, slightly arcuate; intersecondaries short or long; tertiaries often descending from the margin and parallel to the secondaries, or reticulate. Petiole 0.5-0.9(-1.6) cm long, slightly channelled appressed puberulous to glabrous. Fascicles 2-5-flowered. Pedicel 0.5-1 (-2.2) cm long, sericeous. Flowers bisexual. Sepals (4-)5, 2-3.5 mm long, ovate, apex obtuse or rounded, sericeous outside, subglabrous inside. Corolla 4-7 mm long, tube about equalling the lobes, lobes (four-)five, ovate, apex rounded or obtuse, glabrous or with a few appressed hairs outside. Stamens (four-)five, fixed one-quarter to halfway up the corolla tube; filaments 1.5-2.5 mm long, glabrous; anthers 1-2 mm long, lanceolate or ovate, glabrous or sparsely long-hairy. Ovary long-conical, tapering gradually into the style, 4-5-locular, appressed pubescent; style 2-3.5 mm long after anthesis, about equalling the corolla, glabrous; style-head simple. Fruit (not seen, desc. from RB1061), ca. 2.8 × l cm, narrowly ellipsoid, acute. Seed ca. 1.9 × 0.7 cm, with a broad basi-ventral scar. Small tree to 10 m high and 15 cm diam., with widely spreading branches. Flowers pale green to yellowish green, visited by bees (Kuhlmann 3786). Fruit maturing red. Flowering Nov to Jun.

  • Distribution

    E Brazil from Bahia and Minas Gerais to Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Present in lowland rainforest along the coast, and in gallery forest inland in drier areas, from sea level to 750 m altitude.
