Description
Species Description - Small tree; young shoots golden sericeous-tomentose, soon glabrous, pale greyish-buff, smooth or slightly suberous, without lenticels. Leaves spaced, alternate and distichous, (2-)4- 11 × 1.2-5.5 cm, mostly elliptic, apex narrowly attenuate or acuminate, base acute, cuneate or narrowly attenuate, glabrous above, lower surface clothed in minute closely appressed whitish hairs or subglabrous; venation brochidodromous, sometimes with a marginal vein, midrib slightly sunken on the upper surface, secondary veins 9-20 pairs, parallel, straight; intersecondaries long; tertiaries parallel to the secondaries and descending from the margin. Petiole 2-6 mm long, channelled, sericeous-tomentose, soon becoming glabrous. Fascicles 1-4-flowered. Pedicel 0.5-1 cm long, sparsely to densely sericeous-tomentose. Flowers bisexual. Sepals five, (1-)1.5-2 mm long, ovate or lanceolate, apex acute, sparsely sericeous-tomentose outside, sometimes with a glabrous hyaline margin, inner face with sparse appressed pubescence. Corolla 4-5 mm long, tube 2.5-3.5 mm long, slightly expanded at apex, lobes five, 1-1.5 mm long, ovate, apex acute, obtuse or rounded, glabrous. Stamens five, fixed at the top of the corolla tube or base of the lobes; filaments 0.5-1 mm long, glabrous; anthers 0.5-0.75 mm long, lanceolate or oblong, glabrous. Ovary broadly ovoid or pyramidal, five-locular, puberulous; style 0.5-1 mm long after anthesis, glabrous; style-head minutely lobed. Fruit ca. 3.7 × 1.3 cm, slender ellipsoid-lanceolate, apex long tapered, base rounded, smooth glabrous, pericarp fleshy. Seed solitary, ca. 2.3 x 0.6 × 0.5 cm, narrowly ellipsoid with a slightly rounded apex and acute base, testa smooth, shiny, ca. 0.2 mm thick; scar basi-ventral, ca. 1.1 × 0.3 cm, narrowly cordate; embryo vertical, with thin foliaceous cotyledons and long exserted radicle, surrounded by copious endosperm. Field characters. Small tree to 12 m high with a small amount of white latex in the bark. Flowers cream-coloured or greenish, fruit maturing through red to black. Flowering Dec to Feb, fruiting Jan.
