Description
Subspecies Description - Tree; indumentum of young parts closely appressed. Lower leaf surface usually sericeous with golden hairs; leaf shape variable, leaves not thinly chartaceous, secondary veins arcuate. Corolla tube 3-4 times as long as the lobes, creases at base of corolla lobes short or long, indumentum on corolla tube and lobes. Fruit 1-2.5 cm long, usually ellipsoid, one-seeded. Field characters. Tree to 35 m high and 65 cm diam. with small rounded buttresses and fluted bole. Young specimens have smooth bark, but this becomes rough, greyish, fissured or scaly with age. The slash is pink or reddish, with copious sticky white latex. The flowers are pale greenish-cream and the fruit ripens through red to purplish-black. Flowering throughout most of the range is from Jul to Nov with the fruit maturing Nov to Apr. On the Pacific drainage of Ecuador it flowers from Apr to May.

Discussion
The sweet fruit is edible, and the timber used for construction (Venezuela) and charcoal (Ecuador).
Distribution and Ecology: Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas, Amazonian Brazil to 9°S, Amazonian Peru and Ecuador (Amazonian and Pacific slopes). This subspecies is found in a wide range of forest types from lowland tropical rain forest, seasonal semi-evergreen forest, montane and cloud forest, from sea level to 1600 m (but see under relationships). It appears frequently as a riverbank plant and sometimes in flooded forest (igapó).
