Description
Latin Diagnosis - Arbor; ramuli novelli initio parce adpresse puberuli, mox glabri, atro-brunnei, demum cinerascentes, squamati, lenticellis paucis vel nullis. Folia dissita vel laxe congesta, spiraliter disposita, 6.5-18 × 3.6-7.6 cm, late elliptica, oblongo-elliptica vel raro oblanceolata, apice obtuse cuspidata vel raro breviter attenuata, basi anguste cuneata, attenuata vel obtusa, coriacea, glabra; venatio brochidodroma; nervus marginalis praesens; costa et nervi secundarii supra prominula; nervi secundarii 7-14-jugi, plerumque paralleli, arcuati; nervi intersecundarii breves vel nulli; nervi tertiarii pauci, obliqui usque reticulati. Petiolus 1-2(-2.8) cm longus, non canaliculata, glaber. Fasciculi 2-5-flori, axillares et sub foliis dispositi. Pedicellus 1.5-2 mm longus, adpresse puberulus. Flores bisexuales (?). Sepala quinque, 2-2.5 mm longa, lanceolata vel ovata, apice obtusa extra adpresse puberula, intus glabra, ciliata. Corolla 3-4 mm longa; tubus lobos aequans; lobi quinque, elliptici, apice rotundati, glabri, ciliati. Stamina quinque, ad apicem tubo corollae affixa; filamenta 0.5-1 mm longa, glabra; antherae 1-1.25 mm longae, lanceolatae, glabrae. Staminodia quinque, 1-1.5 mm longa, lanceolata, saepe in dimidio inferiore irregulariter dentata, glabra. Discus nullus. Ovarium ovoid-eo-conicum, biloculare, pubescens; stylus post anthesin 1.25-1.5 mm longus; styli capitulum simplex. Fructus 2.5-3 cm longus, ellipsoideus usque obovoideus, apice rotundatus vel obtusus, basi obtusis, laevis (in sicco rugosus), velutinus. Semen solitarium vel geminatum, ca 1.5 cm longum, ellipsoideum usque obovoideum vel planoconvexum (ubi semina geminata), apice rotundatum, basi acutum, testa laevis, pericarpio adherens, ca. 0.3 mm crassa; cicatrix adaxialis, per totem longitudinem extensa, elliptica, 4.5-7 mm lata, embryo cotyledonibus plano-convexis, liberis, radicula leviter exserta; albumen nullum.
Species Description - Tree; young shoots sparsely appressed puberulous at first, soon glabrous, dark brown, becoming grey, scaling, lenticels few or absent. Leaves spaced or loosely clustered, spirally arranged, 6.518 × 3.6-7.6 cm, broadly elliptic, oblong-elliptic or rarely oblanceolate, apex obtusely cuspidate or rarely shortly attenuate, base narrowly cuneate, attenuate or obtuse, coriaceous, glabrous; venation brochidodromous, thin marginal vein present, midrib and secondary veins slightly raised on the upper surface; secondaries 7-14 pairs, mostly parallel, arcuate; intersecondaries short or absent; tertiaries few, oblique to reticulate. Petiole 1-2(-2.8) cm long, not channelled, glabrous. Fascicles 2-5-flowered, axillary and below the leaves. Pedicel 1.5-2 mm long, appressed puberulous. Flowers bisexual (?). Sepals five, 2-2.5 mm long, lanceolate to ovate, apex obtuse, appressed puberulous outside, glabrous inside, ciliate. Corolla 3-4 mm long, tube equalling the lobes, lobes five, elliptic, apex rounded, glabrous, ciliate. Stamens five, fixed at the top of the corolla tube; filaments 0.5-1 mm long, glabrous; anthers 1-1.25 mm long, lanceolate, glabrous. Staminodes five, 1-1.5 mm long, lanceolate, often irregularly toothed in lower half, glabrous. Disk absent. Ovary ovoid-conical, bilocular, pubescent; style 1.25-1.5 mm long after anthesis; style-head simple. Fruit 2.5-3 cm long, ellipsoid to obovoid, apex rounded or obtuse, base obtuse, smooth (wrinkled on drying), velutinous. Seed solitary or paired, ca. 1.5 cm long, ellipsoid to obovoid (plano-convex when seeds paired), apex rounded, base acute, testa smooth, adherent to the pericarp, ca. 0.3 mm thick; scar adaxial, full-length, elliptic, 4.5-7 mm wide; embryo with plano-convex, free cotyledons, radicle slightly exserted; endosperm absent. Field characters. Tree to 26 m high and 40 cm diam. with steep, simple buttresses to 1.5 m high; bole fluted; bark greyish to brown, scaling in thin slender pieces, slash pink, white sticky latex. Flowers greenish-yellow or cream-coloured, fruit maturing yellow or orange. Flowering recorded Nov to Jan, mature fruit Dec to Apr.
