Corolla 2.5-3 mm long (2-2.25 mm long in female), tube equalling the lobes; lobes five, ovate-lanceolate to oblong, apex acute to rounded, glabrous. Stamens five, fixed at the apex of the corolla tube; filaments 0.4-0.5 mm long, glabrous; anthers 0.50.6 mm long, lanceolate to ovate, sometimes shortly apiculate, sparsely hairy or glabrous; stamens converted to lanceolate staminodes in female flower. Staminodes five, 0.75-1 mm long, narrowly triangular, glabrous or with a few hairs at the apex. Disk absent. Ovary broadly conical to ovoid or truncate, unilocular, appressed puberulous; style 0.5-1 mm long after anthesis, glabrous; style-head simple. Fruit 3-3.3 cm long, ellipsoid, apex rounded, base tapering to a short stipe, smooth, subglabrous. Seed solitary, 2-2.2 cm long, oblong, rounded or obtuse at both ends, not laterally compressed, testa smooth, adherent to the pericarp, ca. 1 mm thick; scar adaxial, full-length, ca. 4 mm wide, very rough and warty; embryo with plano-convex, free cotyledons, radicle extending to the surface; endosperm absent. Field characters. Tree to 28 m high and 40 cm diam. with small buttresses. Bole cylindrical, with reddish-brown bark exfoliating in thin scales; slash orange or red, with copious sticky white latex. Discussion
Distribution and Ecology: Venezuela, Surinam and N Brazil in mixed lowland forest on non-flooded land from near sea level to 600 m altitude. It is a common component of the middle and upper storeys of rain forest in Surinam (Schulz 1960: 168). Specimens from wet montane forest (up to 1200 m altitude) in Venezuela are tentatively included in this species.
