Leaves spaced, alternate and distichous or spirally arranged, 3.5-20(-30) × 1.7-7(-11.4) cm, elliptic, oblong-elliptic or oblanceolate, apex obtusely cuspidate or narrowly attenuate, obtuse or rounded, base narrowly attenuate, cuneate, acute, obtuse or rarely rounded, usually coriaceous, glabrous above, finely golden or reddish-brown sericeous below, or sparsely appressed puberulous, less frequently glabrous, indumentum turning paler with age, venation brochidodromous, sometimes with a marginal vein, secondaries joining below the margin to form a submarginal vein, midrib usually sunken on the upper surface, or less frequently flat or slightly raised, secondary veins 15-30 pairs, parallel, usually slightly arcuate; intersecondaries long; often extending to the margin and often almost as strong as the secondaries; higher order venation finely reticulate-areolate, but sometimes with additional stronger veins lying parallel to the secondaries. Petiole 0.4-3 cm long, channelled, appressed puberulous to glabrous, margins often decurrent on the stem as two raised lines. Fascicles axillary, 2-20-flowered, usually developing into stout, recurved densely scaly shoots up to ca. 1 cm long, these persisting on the old wood. Pedicel (1.5-)2-7 mm long, appressed or spreading puberulous, hairs golden to ferruginous. Flower unisexual (plant dioecious). Sepals five, (1.75-)2-3.5(-4) mm long, ovate to suborbicular, apex acute to rounded, golden to ferruginous appressed puberulous on both surfaces, margin sometimes ciliate. Corolla 2.25-4 mm long, shortly and broadly tubular to campanulate, tube 1.25-3.5 mm long, lobes (four-)five, 0.75-1.5 mm long, usually broadly oblong with truncate or rounded margin, glabrous. Stamens (four-)five, included; filaments 0.25-0.6(-l) mm long, glabrous; anthers 0.4-0.75 mm long, lanceolate or ovate, glabrous, absent in female flowers. Staminodes (four-)five, 0.5-1(-1.25) mm long, lanceolate, subulate or oblong, glabrous. Annular pubescent disk usually present around the base of the ovary in male flowers, obscure or absent in female. Ovary broad, usually flattened in male flowers, ovoid or conical in female, five-locular, long-pubescent; style slightly exserted in bud, 0.75-2 mm long after anthesis, glabrous; style-head simple or minutely lobed. Fruit 1-2.8 cm long, ellipsoid or obovoid, apex rounded, often apiculate, base rounded or tapered, smooth, finely appressed puberulous to glabrous. Seed solitary, 0.75-2.1 cm long, laterally compressed, testa smooth, shining, 0.3-0.75 mm thick; scar adaxial, 1-3.5 mm wide.
