Axillary or lateral spines usually present. Leaves spirally arranged and spaced at first, soon becoming fascicled on short shoots, 1-5.5 × 0.4-2 cm, spatulate, oblanceolate to broadly elliptic, apex rounded to emarginate or obtuse, base narrowly attenuate or cuneate, usually chartaceous, upper surface glabrous, lower surface loosely pubescent to glabrous; venation brochidodromous without a marginal vein, midrib flat on the upper surface; secondary veins 5-9(-13) pairs, ascending, arcuate, slightly convergent or parallel; intersecondaries usually moderate to long; tertiaries reticulate, usually conspicuous on both surfaces. Petiole 1-3 (-4) mm long, slightly channelled, pubescent or glabrous. Flowers bisexual, in 5-20-flowered fascicles, axillary or on leafless shoots. Pedicel 0.4-1.2 cm long, glabrous. Sepals five(six), 1.5-2.25 mm long, ovate or oblong, rounded, glabrous or strigose outside, glabrous inside. Corolla 2.25-2.5 mm long, tube 0.5-0.75 mm long, glabrous; lobes five; median segment broadly ovate, elliptic or suborbicular, apex rounded, lateral segments lanceolate to falcate, often erose, 0.75-1 mm long; stamens five, glabrous; filaments 0.75-1 mm long, anthers 0.5-0.8 mm long, lanceolate-sagittate. Staminodes five, 1.25-1.5 mm long, broadly lanceolate; infolded, glabrous. Ovary ovoid, (4)5-locular, strigose or glabrous; style 0.75-1 mm long after anthesis, glabrous; style-head simple. Fruit 5-7(-9) mm long, broadly ellipsoid or globose, apex and base rounded, smooth, glabrous or rarely sparsely strigose; pericarp ca. 1 mm thick, fleshy. Seed one(two), 0.4-0.7 cm long, ellipsoid or globose, with truncate base; testa hard, smooth, shining, sometimes mottled, ca. 0.2 mm thick; scar basal, in two parts, a half-moon or circular basal part, 1.5-2 mm across and a smaller, laterally elongate part on the abaxial side near the base, the two sometimes coalescing; embryo vertical or oblique, with plano-convex cotyledons and slightly exserted radicle, sometimes surrounded by a thin layer of endosperm.
