  • Description

Variety Description - Plants glabrous to sparsely puberulent on young growth, the hairs up to ca. 0.2 mm long. Leaves ovate to lanceolate, 3-7 cm long, 1.5-4 cm wide; apex sharply acuminate or acute; base acute or rounded; margin entire. Petals 7-8 mm long; disk 2-5 mm across; stamens ca. 100-200.

  • Discussion

Campomanesia eugenioides var. eugenioides is very similar to forms of C. xanthocarpa with small leaves (C. rhombea sensu Legrand et Klein). For instance Klein 3955 (C. eugenioides var. eugenioides) and Klein 4532 (C. xanthocarpa) are superficially nearly identical. But C. xanthocarpa has tufts of hairs in the axils of the main veins below, whereas C. eugenioides does not. Campomanesia xanthocarpa has basically elliptic leaves, while those of C. eugenioides var. eugenioides are ovate or lanceolate. In C. xanthocarpa the bracteoles are persistent until about anthesis and are 2-6 mm long; in C. eugenioides var. eugenioides the bracteoles usually fall before anthesis and are 1-2 mm long.
