Description
Species Description - Massive tree; young branches pale to dark brown, finely puberulous or glabrous, often lenticellate, becoming rough with prominent leaf scars. Stipules 2-4 mm long, broadly lanceolate, glabrous, caducous. Leaves (6-) 10-15(-20) × 2.8-4.5(-5.7) cm, narrowly oblanceolate, oblong or elliptic, apex narrowly attenuate, acute, obtuse or rounded, base narrowly attenuate; glabrous; chartaceous; midrib raised on the upper surface, sometimes slightly recessed; secondaries 23-30 pairs; higher order venation finely reticulate to areolate. Petiole 1.5-2.7 cm long, slightly channelled in the upper half, glabrous. Flowers 4-5 in a fascicle. Pedicel 1.3-1.8 cm (to 3.3 cm in fruit), finely puberulous, sometimes reflexed in bud. Sepals 4-5 mm long, lanceolate, apex acute or obtuse, densely puberulous outside, glabrous inside, often slightly ciliate. Corolla glabrous, ca. 4.5 mm long, tube ca. 1 mm long; lobes six, divided to base into three segments, median segment narrowly boat-shaped, clawed, apex acute or obtuse; lateral segments equalling the median segment, narrowly elliptic or lanceolate. Stamens six, glabrous; filaments 1.5-2 mm long, shortly connate to the staminodes; anthers 1.75-2 mm long, narrowly lanceolate-sagittate. Staminodes six, glabrous, 3-4 mm long, apex deeply bifid or several times divided, the lobes filiform. Ovary ovoid, sometimes ribbed, 6-9-locular, glabrous; style 4-5 mm long after anthesis, glabrous. Fruit (immature) 1.5 × 1.2 cm, ovoid, apex rounded, base truncate, smooth, glabrous. Seed solitary, ca. 1.3 × 0.6 x 0.4 cm, laterally compressed, with a hard, smooth testa ca. 0.5 mm thick; scar basi-ventral, ca. 6 × 2 mm. Field characters. A massive tree to 50 m high and exceeding 1 m diam, sometimes buttressed, with viscous white sap. The flowers are white and the mature fruit yellowish-green. According to the field data on Fróes 134 this species has smooth bark, but I regard this observation with some doubt, as the genus is characterised worldwide by its deeply fissured and often grid-cracked bark. Flowering Jun to Sep, with fruit maturing Oct-Nov.

Discussion
Distribution and Ecology: Colombia (Amazonas), Peru (Loreto, Madre de Dios), Brazil (Acre, Amazonas, Matto Grosso, Rondônia), Amazonian Bolivia. This species occurs on swampy ground in lowland rainforest, and is particularly frequent on periodically flooded (varzea) or permanently flooded (igapó) sites. Not known above ca. 200 m altitude.
