Description
Species Description - Tree; young branches mid-brown, glabrous, usually lenticellate, becoming pale greyish-brown, rough and finely fissured. Stipules present, 1.5-2 mm long, oblong or lanceolate, caducous. Leaves 5-9 × 1.6-3.2 cm, oblanceolate, apex obtuse, rounded or emarginate, base narrowly cuneate or attenuate; upper surface glabrous, lower with dense closely appressed yellowish-brown or greyish-brown indumentum; chartaceous to slightly coriaceous; midrib slightly raised on the upper surface, but recessed; secondary veins 12-18 pairs, higher order venation obscured by the indumentum. Petiole 1-1.8 cm long, channelled, appressed scurfy-puberulous or glabrous. Flowers 2-5(-7) in a fascicle. Pedicel 8-9 mm long, scurfy appressed puberulous, strongly reflexed in bud. Sepals 3.5-4.5 mm long, lanceolate, apex obtuse or acute, densely appressed puberulous outside, the outer whorl rather scurfy; inner face of sepals subglabrous. Corolla glabrous, 3.5-4 mm long, tube ca. 1.5 mm long; lobes six, divided to base into three segments, median segment narrowly boat-shaped, clawed, apex usually rounded; lateral segments equalling the median segment, narrowly lanceolate. Stamens six, glabrous; filaments 1.5-2 mm long, shortly fused with the staminodes; anthers 1-1.2 mm long, lanceolate. Staminodes six, glabrous, ca. 2-2.5 mm long, divided above into two long filiform lobes. Ovary ovoid, 6-locular, glabrous; style 4-4.5 mm long after anthesis, glabrous. Fruit (description from Ducke, 1957: 650) ellipsoid or subglobose. Seed small, with a turgid dorsal side without a longitudinal keel. Field characters. An unbuttressed tree to 40 m high and 80 cm diam., with greyish brown deeply fissured bark; slash deep reddish with plentiful sticky white latex. The flowers are greenish-white, and the mature fruit pale yellowish-green, sometimes slightly pink on one side (Ducke, 1957: 650) flowering Jul to Oct.
