Description
Species Description - Herbs, 4-23(-37) cm high. Stems yellow to green, mostly unbranched. Leaves subulate to narrowly ovate, 1.6-9.3(-13.5) mm long, 0.4-2(-2.5) mm wide, apex acute to mostly acuminate, basal ones rosulate, sometimes lacking. Inflorescence 1-many-flowered, either capitate, consisting of two contracted, recurved cincinni, or the cincinni less contracted and upright, 4-11 mm long, flowers 0.5-0.8 mm apart. Bracts narrowly ovate to ovate, imbricate, 1-3(-3.7) mm long, 0.2-2(-2.4) mm wide, apex mostly acute. Flowers sessile to subsessile, tubular, white to yellowish white, sometimes purple or green, (2-)2.5-6 mm long. Outer tepals deltate, 0.5-0.9 mm long and wide, margins involute. Inner tepals elliptic to triangular, 0.1-0.5 mm long, 0.1-0.2 mm wide, sometimes lacking. Floral tube 0.7-1, 5(-l .9) mm long, 0.4-1.1 mm diam., wings reduced to ribs, running from the top of the outer tepals down to the middle or the top of the ovary, 0.1-0.3(-0.8) mm wide, much narrower over the floral tube and over the ovary. Connective bearing apically two, and basally one appendage. Style 1-1.8 mm long, branches 0.3-0.6 mm long. Ovary obovoid to ellipsoid, sometimes globose, 1.3-2.6 x 0.9-1.8 mm. Capsule white to yellow, obovoid to ellipsoid, sometimes globose, 1.3-2.9 x 0.9-2 mm, dehiscent by transverse slits. Seeds 0.2-0.4 x 0.1 mm.

Discussion
This species is easily recognized by its small, capitate inflorescence and its almost wingless flowers with very inconspicuous inner tepals.
Distribution and Ecology: From the southern United States and the West Indies in the north to Argentina, Paraguay and southern Brazil in the south; on savannas or in swamps, on sandy or clayey soils, often in association with Drosera ( Correll 33533), Utricularia (Ridley s.n.), Eriocaulon (Salzmann s.n.), Ischaemum guianense (Schulz 10343), Xyris (Beardslee s.n.), Sphagnum (Sucre 5040, 5267), Lycopodium cernuum (Schuster 11055), sometimes with other Burmanniaceae: B. flava (Malme 1586B), B. biflora (Thorne 6897 p.p.), Apteria aphylla (Standley 12839 p.p.); from sea level to 1400 m; flowering all year.
