    Species Description - Tree to 30 m; branchlets angular, stiff, rusty-tomentellous, 2-3 mm thick, glabrescent; terminal buds densely tomentose, usually surrounded by many scales. Leaves alternate, coriaceous, (obovate-)lanceolate or (obovate-)elliptic, 5-15 x 4-6 cm, base cuneately decurrent, margin flattish, apex shortly, obtusely acuminate, glabrous, midrib and nerves impressed above, pruinose and sparsely appressed-pilose, midrib and nerves prominent, glabrescent beneath, nerves 7-12 per side, towards margin arcuately ascendent; petioles 2-3 mm thick, tomentellous, canaliculate, glabrescent, 1-2 cm long. Panicles subterminal, many-flowered, tomentellous, to 10 cm long. Flowers campanulate, densely tomentellous, 3 x 2 mm; tube hardly narrowed below tepals, turbinate, inside sericeous; pedicels 2-3 mm long; tepals broadly ovate, inside subglabrous, outer ones about 1 x 1.3 mm, inner ones slightly smaller; stamens included, erect, about 1 mm long, those of ser. I and II with glabrous anthers and connectives slightly protruding beyond the conspicuous cells, filaments as wide as anthers and 1.5 times longer, densely hirsute, those of ser. Ill sterile, truncate, minutely pubescent, with two large basal glands; staminodes of ser. IV minute, stipitiform, hirsute, or absent; pistil glabrous, about 2 mm long; style as long as ovary; stigma minute. Berry ellipsoid, 2.7 x 2 cm; cupule subhemispherical, irregularly thickened below margin, minutely rusty-verrucous, 0.8-1.5 x 1.5-2 cm, margin simple.

    Plants from upper elevations not only have stiffer, smaller leaves but are also provided with many scales on their prominent terminal buds.

    The nearest relative is A. santalodora.
