Description
Species Description - Tree to 15 m; young branchlets laxly and minutely tomentellous, to 2 mm diam., glabrescent; terminal bud slender, tomentellous, to 1 cm long. Leaves evenly distributed along branchlets, subcoriaceous, elliptic or (ovate-)lanceolate, 2-3 times longer than wide, 8-18 x 3-7 cm wide, obtuse or acute, sometimes angustate at base, apex acute or acuminate (acumen to 2 cm long), glabrous above, provided with simple, appressed, minute, caducous hairs along midrib and venation beneath, nerves 5-7 on each side, arcuately ascending, flat or slightly impressed above, prominulous beneath, reticulate veins perceptible above, slightly prominent beneath, margin slightly revolute at base of blade; petioles tomentellous, soon glabrescent, deeply canaliculate, 0.8-1.2 cm long. Panicles subterminal, ± solitary, in axils of deciduous bracts or of persistent leaves, slightly tomentellous, few-flowered, to 6 cm long. Flowers sparsely pubescent, 2-2.5 x 1.5 mm; floral tube sericeous inside; pedicels 1-2 mm long; tepals erect, inside at base strigulose, at margin ciliate, outer ones broadly ovate, 0.7 mm long, inner ones ovate, 0.9 mm long; stamens about 1 mm long, those of ser. I and II with broad anthers, large introrse/latrorse cells, slightly protruding, papillose connectives, and pilose filaments narrower than anthers, of ser. III with glabrous anthers and pilose, biglandulate filaments as wide as anthers; staminodes stipitiform, hairy, 0.4 mm long, or absent; pistil 2.2 mm long, glabrous; style as long as ovary; stigma oblique, minute. Berry (immature) ellipsoid, 1.2 x 1 cm; cupule cyathiform, 1 x 1.5 cm, outside verruculous.

Maguire et al. 43813 (NY), from the upper Mazaruni River of Guyana, differs in its densely contracted inflorescence.
