Description
Variety Description - Shrub or tree, 2.0-6.0, occasionally up to 10.0 m tall; trunk up to 15.0 cm diam; bark yellowish to reddish-brown. Branchlets slender, glabrous or short-pubescent at tips, older parts rather early gray-corticate, more or less densely lenticellate. Leaves persistent in general, variable in shape, texture and size apparently according to ecological conditions, generally more or less narrowly ovate-oblong to -elliptic, rarely broadly so, apex usually slenderly long-acuminate to subcaudate, tip bluntish, base often somewhat asymmetrical, generally cuneate or obtuse, membranaceous to thin-coriaceous, dark green and lustrous above when fresh, more or less densely pellucid-punctate and -lineate, glabrous, though occasionally short-pubescent beneath mainly on midrib and nerves, subcrenate-serrate to entire, (3.0-)6.0-14.0 cm long, (2.0-)3.0-5.0(-7.0) cm broad, lateral nerves 5-8 pairs, curved, slightly prominent beneath, reticulation of veins and veinlets rather dense, generally not much raised though occasionally more distinctly so on both faces; petiole glabrous or pubescent, slender, 4.0-8.0(-10.0) mm long; stipules subovate, scarious, 1.0-1.5 mm long, caducous. Inflorescences axillary, sessile, fascicled, variable as to the density of the tomentum, few- to many-flowered; bracts small, glabrous or pubescent, forming a cushion; pedicels slender, articulate near or below middle, glabrous or hairy, 2.0-5.0 mm long. Flowers with a disagreeable smell. Sepals 5, slightly united at base, broadly ovate, pale yellow to whitish or sometimes greenish, obtuse, erect at anthesis, glabrous to tomentellous dorsally, ciliate, (1.5-)2.0 mm long. Stamens 10; filaments hardly inequilong, glabrous or sparsely pilose, 1.0-1.5 mm long; anthers didymous-subglobose, 0.3 mm diam, with a small apical gland. Disk-lobes a little united with the stamens at base, whitish-tomentellous, ca 1.0 mm long. Ovary ovoid-obtusangular, glabrous or sparsely hairy towards the short slender trifid style (the latter remaining undivided in galled flowers); stigmas capitellate. Capsule ovoid-globose, obtusangular, subtended by the persistent spreading sepals, (sub)glabrous, yellow, becoming brown or reddish-purplish in age, 3.0-4.0 mm long, splitting into 3 subcoriaceous valves; seeds 2-6, flattened-ellipsoidal, (1.5-)2.0 mm long; testa light brown, glabrous, reticulate-foveolate; aril reddish, sticky, incomplete.
Distribution and Ecology - Widely dispersed - and locally common from Mexico (Sinaloa-San Luis Potosí-Nayarit-Jalisco) southwards to Argentina (Salta-Formosa-N Chaco-Corrientes-Misiones) and Uruguay; in primary or secondary, wet or dry, rarely caducifolius forest or thickets, chiefly at low elevations, occasionally ascending to 2300 m alt.
