Description
Species Description - Tree, 3.0-8.0(-10.0) m tall. Branchlets glabrous at tips, subangular, lenticels sparse. Leaves persistent, ovate-oblong or oblong, rarely obovate-oblong, apex shortly obtusely acuminate, base subinequilateral, obtuse or subcordate, chartaceous to subcoriaceous, glabrous, minutely glandular-serrate, pellucid-punctate and -lineate, 5.0-9.0(-14.0) cm long, 2.5-4.0(-5.5) cm broad, lateral nerves 6-8 pairs prominent beneath, reticulation of the more or less transverse veins with the veinlets dense, slightly raised on both faces; petiole (4.0-)5.0-8.0 mm long; stipules ovate-acuminate, ca 1.0 mm long, caducous. Inflorescence from foliate and partly already defoliate axils, composed of 2-4-branched cymes generally from the end of short branchlets, laxly (5-)8-20-flowered, 4.0-6.0 cm long incl peduncle (1.0-3.0 cm); pedicels rather slender, glabrous or puberulent, 5.0-12.0 mm long, the 2 basal bracts ovate-acuminate, ca 1.0 mm long. Flowers white or greenish. Sepals ovate-oblong, ciliolate, 4.0-5.0 mm long, 3.0-4.0 mm broad. Stamens 60-80; filaments glabrous, 4.0-5.0 mm long. Ovary elongate-ovoid, glabrous or very laxly hairy, gradually tapering to the style (2.0-2.5 mm); stigma subcapitately thickened, obscurely 3-lobed. Fruit ellipsoid, yellow or brownish, 1.5 cm diam; pericarp thin-coriaceous, lignescent, yellow inside; seeds numerous, ovoid, flattened, with resinous dots on testa, ca 3.0 mm long.
Distribution and Ecology - Scattered through Amazonian Colombia, Brazil and E Peru; in often riverine, also swampy, maybe periodically inundated lowland forest or restinga. Very close to and maybe only an ecological variant of L. americana.
