  • Description

Description - Tree 5.0-20.0 m tall; trunk up to 30.0 cm diam. Branchlets appressedly ferrugineous-hairy at tips, glabrescent below, early gray-corticate. Leaves periodically deciduous, ovate to ovate- or oblong-elliptic, apex subacutely acuminate for 1.0-1.5 cm, base rounded to subcordate though the very base suddenly constricted and bearing a pair of thick flattish to cup-shaped glands, chartaceous, a little glossy on both faces, glabrous except for short, more or less spreading and dense hairs on midrib and the lower part of the lamina beneath, entire to undulate, 6.0-13.0 cm long, (3.0-)4.0-8.0 cm broad, with 5 nerves from the base (the outer pair less distinct) and 1 or 2 pairs of upper lateral ones, all nerves slightly raised above, manifestly prominent beneath, veins more or less transverse and numerous from the midrib, other outer ones slightly curved-ascending and rather obscurely looping before the margin, somewhat raised on both faces as is to a minor degree the reticulation of the veinlets; petiole rather robust, appressedly fulvous-pubescent, 2.0-4.5 cm long. Inflorescence appearing with the new leaves, in terminal 3-5-flowered umbel-like fascicles; pedicels robust, articulate immediately above base, ca 1.5 cm long, fulvous-tomentose. Sepals 3, oblong or elongately so, obtuse, yellowish, shortly fulvous-tomentose on both faces, 8.0-10.0 mm long, 2.0-3.0 mm broad. Petals 3 (very rarely 4 by splitting of one petal lengthwise), similar to but narrower and less densely hairy than the sepals. Stamens indefinite; filaments glabrous or sparsely hairy at base, ca 1.0 cm long; anthers elliptic, 0.5 mm long. Ovary subglobose, densely appressedly hairy; style robust, 3.0-4.0 mm long; stigma 7-lobulate. Fruit globular, apiculate, glabrous, minutely verruculose, slightly vertically 9-striate, (3.0-)4.0-5.0 cm diam, with 9 lamelliform placentas protruding far into the cavity; pericarp subcoriaceous, brittle, 1.0 m mm thick; seeds numerous.
