Description
Description - Shrub or small tree, 2.0-10.0 (very rarely -20.0) m tall; trunk rarely up to 20.0 cm diam; bark brown, rough. Branchlets gray-puberulous to -tomentose, glabrescent, sometimes quite glabrous from the beginning, lenticellate. Leaves and stipules variable as to form, size, density of tomentum and coarseness of serration, broadly to narrowly ovate or lanceolate-oblong, rarely elliptic, apex acuminate, tip bluntish by an apical gland, base rounded to deeply cordate, generally with 2 basal glands above, membranaceous to thin-chartaceous, more or less nigrescent when dry, glabrous or laxly short-pubescent in general, rarely more densely pubescent above, beneath either softly tomentose or hirtellous, though not rarely mainly so along midrib and lateral nerves, rarely glabrous beneath, glandular-serrate to -crenate, 3.5-10.0(-15.0) cm long, 2.0-5.0(-10.0) cm broad, (3-)5- or 7-nerved from base, upper pinnate nerves 2-4 pairs, all nerves often a little impressed above, slightly prominent beneath, reticulation rather obscure; petiole 0.5-2.0(-3.0) cm long; stipules (sub)sessile, falcate-semiovate or -lanceolate, extremely inequilateral, apex acute, base oblique, glandular-serrate, glabrous to hirtellous, 5.0-8.0 (rarely -17.0) mm long, more or less persistent mainly in the upper axils though sometimes early caducous. Inflorescence racemose or corymbiform at the end of lateral branchlets, slender, sometimes up to 12-flowered, though generally few- or even 1-flowered. Flowers fragrant, variable in size and in density of pubescence, 8.0-14.0 mm diam; pedicels slender, 6.0-17.0 mm long, sometimes bracteolate. Sepals 3 (rarely 4), ovate or subcordate-ovate, apex acute or obtuse, entire or practically so i e rarely with 1 or 2 short glands on either side, greenish, glabrous to rather densely gray-tomentellous outside, white-tomentellous in general inside, 4.0-7.0 mm long, 3.0-5.0(-6.0) mm broad. Petals 3 (sometimes 0 by abortion), oblong- to obovate-elliptic, short-acuminate, glabrous or tomentellous to various degree, of the size of the sepals. Stamens inserted on a hairy receptacle; filaments glabrous. Ovary subglobose, glabrous to tomentellous; style ca 4.0 mm long. Berry capsular, finally juicy and weakly sweetish, glabrous to tomentellous, 6.0-8.0 mm diam; pericarp thin, becoming light to deep red during maturity, finally almost black; seeds several, ellipsoid, 1.5 mm long, 1.0 mm broad; testa black, longitudinally striate.
