Description
Description - Shrubs or small trees. Leaves alternate, (3-5-)7-nerved from base, penninerved above, glandular-serrate, often with 2 basal glands, petiolate; stipules small to large, foliaceous, caducous or persistent. Inflorescences terminal on lateral branchlets, in short racemes, corymbs or fascicles, sometimes reduced to a solitary flower; pedicels provided with a basal linear bract, articulate and bibracteolate above the base. Flowers [male and female]. Sepals 3 (rarely 4 or 5), valvate, persistent. Petals isomerous and alternate with, and smaller than the sepals, persistent, rarely abortive. Stamens indefinite (50-70), pluri-seriate, free, inserted on the slightly elevated receptacle; filaments filiform; anthers small, didymous-subglobose, almost basifixed, 2-locular, longitudinally dehiscent. Ovary free, subsessile, 3-5(-6)-locular; ovules numerous, anatropous, fixed to the inner angle on lamelliform, sometimes 2-lobed placentas; style simple, filiform; stigma small, faintly 3-lobed. Fruit baccate, dry or almost so, indehiscent, surmounted by the persistent style, 3-5(-6)-locular; seeds numerous, small, angular-ovoid, in a white pulp; testa brittle; endosperm copious; embryo straight; cotyledons thick.
