  • Discussion

    Relationships

Subspecies pendulispica is closely related to G. guidonia with which it is often confused. The differences between them also serve to distinguish G. macrophylla as a whole from G. guidonia. They are the 1-2-ovulate locules (always uniovulate in G. guidonia) and the structure of the fruit (capsule of G. guidonia smooth, glabrous, shining brown or reddish-brown, nearly always with prominent pale lenticels). Guarea macrophylla also lacks the conspicuously lenticellate young branches which are so characteristic of G. guidonia. The leaf of G. guidonia shows the characteristic intermittent apical growth, whereas in three subspecies of G. macrophylla (subsp, macrophylla, pachycarpa and pendulispica) the leaf is terminated by a dormant non-active bud.
