Description
Species Description - Young branches with appressed malpighiaceous or dibrachiate hairs becoming glabrous, pale brown to greyish-white, rather rough, usually lenticellate. Bud scales absent. Leaves imparipinnate or pinnate with one leaflet of ultimate pair orientated to simulate a terminal leaflet, 12-30 cm long, petiole semiterete, rhachis usually canaliculate, minutely puberulous; petiolule l-1.5(-3) mm long. Leaflets alternate to subopposite rarely opposite, (6-)9-11(-16), with a pair of caducous linear to subulate vestigial leaflets 1-2 mm long and ca. 1-2.5 cm above base of petiole (absent in subsp, cinerascens), oblanceolate, oblong, oblong-lanceolate or elliptic, apex acuminate or attenuate, base usually rounded, less frequently obtuse, acute, cuneate, or rarely truncate or cordate, chartaceous, 9.5-19[12.5] cm long, (2.5-)3-4.5(-6)[3.6] cm broad, upper midrib puberulous to short pubescent, lower midrib usually puberulous, lower lamina with scattered minute appressed malpighiaceous or dibrachiate hairs or subglabrous, very rarely glandular-punctate and -striate; venation eucamptodromous, midrib sunken or prominent; secondaries (11-) 14-17(-21) on either side of midrib, usually shallowly ascending, arcuate or ± straight, parallel or slightly convergent; intersecondaries short, obscure; tertiaries obscure. Flowers unisexual, plants dioecious; inflorescence axillary or several clustered on a short axillary shoot, 3-19 cm long, a slender to broadly pyramidal, laxly- to densely-flowered thyrse, flowers ± erect in bud, strigulose; pedicel 0.5-1.5 mm long. Calyx nearly always patelliform rarely rotate or shallowly cyathiform, 0.5-1 mm long, with (4-)5 broadly triangular or ovate, acute to obtusely attenuate lobes 1/4-1/2 length of calyx, sparsely appressed strigulose. Petals 4-5, free or fused for 1/3-2/3 their length and then becoming free as they reflex, valvate, (2-)3-4 mm long, 1-1.5 mm broad, lanceolate, apex acute, sparsely or densely appressed puberulous or strigulose outside, glabrous inside. Staminal tube urceolate or cyathiform rarely short cylindrical; filaments completely fused, 1-2(-2.5) mm long and broad, margin usually with 8-10 lanceolate to subulate lobes alternating with anthers and 1/4-3/4 their length or absent, alternate filaments sometimes shorter, outside usually glabrous occasionally with a few crisped hairs especially in upper half, inside coarsely pubescent to glabrous; anthers 8-10, 0.6-0.8(-1.0) mm long, glabrous; antherodes slender, not dehisced, without pollen. Nectary absent. Ovary ovoid, 3(-4)-locular, loculi with 2 collateral ovules, densely strigulose to short pubescent; style stout, glabrous at least in upper half; style-head capitate to small discoid, equalling or exceeding anthers; pistillode ± conical containing well-formed non-functional ovules. Capsule ellipsoid or narrowly obovoid, gradually tapering to base, apex obtuse to rounded, smooth, densely granular papillose mixed with minute appressed hairs, (1.5-)2-3 cm long, 0.6-1.3 cm broad, 3-valved, valves eventually reflexed; pericarp 0.3-1 mm thick; endocarp thin, cartilaginous. Seeds 1-2, collateral in each fruit, 1-1.5 cm long, 0.5-0.7 cm broad, broadest above middle, completely surrounded by thin fleshy arillode which also develops around aborted ovules; arillode free except for thin line of attachment from micropyle to raphe; seed coat membraneous. Embryo with plano-convex, collateral cotyledons, radicle apical, included. Endosperm absent.
