The herbarium includes plant species recorded from South India, especially the Kerala region and adjacent Tamil Nadu as well as Karnataka regions, with ethno-medicinal values and Ayurvedic importance. The institute is constantly engaging in Medico-Ethno Botanical surveys in different parts of Kerala for documenting the traditional folk claims and plant species used for treatments in ethnic communities of Kerala. And also includes the plant species recorded during the exploration trips to parts of Western Ghats of India. So, the herbarium constitutes an important collection of medicinal plants of Southern India, especially Kerala state.
