The Tapajós River is the fifth largest tributary of the Amazon River. Its watershed encompasses 489,000 square kilometers in the southern Brazilian Amazon, mainly in the states of Pará and Mato Grosso, but also with small portions in Amazonas and Rondônia. It drains a large area of the Brazilian Shield and encompasses diverse habitats spanning the Amazon Rainforest and Cerrado biomes.

The Tapajos Basin harbors a diverse Amazonian flora, with many species that are restricted to the region. While data are currently too few to reliably estimate the total number of vascular plant species in the flora, a total of several thousand species is likely.

The data accessible through this website, including regional and protected area species checklists, were generated de-novo or amassed from existing sources by personnel of the Flora Tapajós Project, a long-term, multi-institutional effort to vastly improve the inventory of vascular plants in the Tapajós Basin.

Map of the Tapajós Basin

Photo Gallery

How to Cite

This website, hosted by the New York Botanical Garden, is an evolving repository of information on the vascular plant flora of the basin of the Tapajós River in the Brazilian Amazon.
