Description:

Shrub; stem 4 inches thick, gnarly, 10 to 15 feet high, branched from below the middle; wood slightly odorless, tasteless, rather hard, yellowish on the outside, abruptly changing to the nearly black heartwood; bark thick, brownish except the smoothish yellowish-gray epidermis; branches widely spreading, laxly rebranched; leaves subchartaceous, horizontal or descendingly curved, brown lepidote beneath, dull dark green above, flat; fruits flattish globose, less than 0.5 inch across, green but covered with brown lepidote scales such as the calyx and pedicel; staminate flowers upon short spikes; the inner organs yellowish-green. Phenology of specimen: Fruit.
Habitat:

In seepage rock crevices on steep wooded flanks along the river.
