Description:

Small middle sized tree; stem 1 foot thick, terete, 30 feet high, branched from below the middle; wood hard, bitter, odorless, the outer one half yellowish, the central yellowish-brown and suddenly different; bark thick, dull yellowish-brown throughout, checked on the surface; main branches long and widely spreading, freely rebranched, the twigs short and erect; leaves terminally clustered, ascending, coriaceous, paler beneath, nearly flat; infrutescence descending green, the slender spikes few inches long; nuts stubbily fusiform at both ends, terete, 1.5 inches long, 3/4 inches thick across the middle; the stony seed yellowish brown. Phenology of specimen: Fruit.
Habitat:

In sallow, wet earth, lying upon a stony subsoil of wooded river banks.
