Ecuador. Tungurahua: Found wild between San Francisco and Machay along the road in the valley of Pastaza River.

Description:
Largest culm abot 7 m tall and 3.5 cm in diameter, erect at base then broadly nodding above. Internodes all densely set with appressed hairs, hollow. Culm leaves all decidouous. Branches form at all or nearly all nodes, all very thorny. Clump heavily cut. Flowering. Phenology of specimen: Flower.

Frequent along the road, in the river bottom or the Pastaza and on steep forested slopes from El Topo to the mouth of the Río Blanco or a little above it, apparently stopping at an elevation of about 1600 m.
