Description:

Description - Leaves unifoliolate, the petioles bicornutely stipellate apically or totally devoid of petiolar appendages, the petiolules mostly less than 1 mm long, commonly ca 0.5 mm long, but often lacking, the leaves sometimes appearing simple because of the suppression of a distinct articulation between the petiole and the petiolule.

Discussion:

One additional collection, Killip & Smith 28462 (NY, US), from Peru, has been assigned here in spite of the vestiture on the undersides of the leaflets. Since the collection is only fruiting and there appear to be no other differences, it seems to be better to assign it here instead of describing another subspecific taxon.

I have seen holotypes or type material of all the names in the synonomy of this variety and so it is rather easy to make the decisions implied. The type of Rittera grandiflora Vahl is different in no way from the usual material of the variety. Willdenow renamed Swartz’s species but fortunately his name has received almost no recognition. Poeppig probably never considered the possibility that his S. calophylla could be synonymous with a predominantly West Indian species but any morphological differences in the entire range are so thoroughly continuous as to lack biological significance.
