Discussion:

In spite of Donnell Smith’s statement that the leaves are rarely trifoliolate it is difficult to find a sheet without at least one such leaf. The very broadly winged rachis and petiole distinguishes the species from S. myrtifolia, its nearest relative with 5-9-foliolate leaves.
