Description:

Description - Tree 7-10 m tall, the branchlets at first strigulose, or strigulose and pilosulose, very soon glabrescent; stipules caducous to deciduous, (5-) 10-15 mm long, 2-3 mm wide, lanceolate to narrowly lanceolate, the apex acute to acuminate, strigulose externally but soon glabrescent; petioles 14-23 mm long, canaliculate, the ridges terminating in stipels, glabrous or pilosulose and glabrescent; rachis 4.5-7(-11.5) cm long, canaliculate, stipellate at each pair of leaflets, glabrous, or pilosulose and glabrescent; leaflets glabrous, or sparingly pilosulose on the leaflet-costa, 3- or 4-jugate, the petiolules 1.5-2.5 mm long, glabrous or pilosulose, the blades of the lowermost pair smaller, 3.5-4.5 cm long, 2.5 cm wide, the blades of the other pairs 5-11 cm long, (2-)3.5-5 cm wide, all the blades oval or ovate to elliptic, the base acute to rounded and obtuse, the apex bluntly acute to rounded-obtuse, the tip usually more or less retuse, the venation prominulous to subobscure, the costa and primary veins about plane on the upper surface, more or less salient beneath; inflorescence racemose, the racemes solitary or in few-branched panicles, axillary to ramuligerous, 5-15 cm long, the axis minutely strigulose, the bracts persistent, narrowly to broadly triangular, 1-2 mm long, acute, minutely strigulose externally, glabrous within; bracteoles lacking; pedicels (5-)7-12 mm long, minutely strigulose; buds globose, usually umbonate, 4-4.5 mm diameter, glabrous; calyx segments 2, hemispheric, glabrous, persistent with old flowers; petal yellow, glabrous, the claw 1-2.5 mm long, the blade orbicular to broadly ovate in outline, cordate basally, 9-11 mm long, 10-12 mm wide; larger stamens 2-3, glabrous, the filaments 6.5-11 mm long, the anthers oval to oblong, 1.5-2 mm long, 0.8-1 mm wide, the pollen globose to deltoid, 21-26 n diameter, the smaller stamens glabrous, the filaments 4-7 mm long, the anthers suborbicular, the pollen mostly deltoid, 21-26 long and wide; gynoecium glabrous, the stigma truncate, the style 0.5-2 mm long, arcuate, the ovary falcate-fusiform, 3.5-5.5 mm long, 1-1.5 mm wide, the gynophore 2.5-4 mm long; fruits 3.5-4.5 cm long, ca 2 cm diameter, oblong-elliptic in outline, glabrous, long-beaked apically, the aril gelatinous.

Discussion:

This appears to be a localized endemic with no close relatives; the nearest species both geographically and morphologically is S. jorori of northern and eastern Bolivia. The nature of the calyx, the relative proportions of the style and its posture are distinguishing characteristics. There is also more than a superficial resemblance to S. cubensis, which has apetalous flowers.
