Discussion:

Since this is the type species of the genus, it is important that it be interpreted correctly. Sandwith in 1934 discussed the identity of the Guyana material relative to the Aublet collection at the British Museum. There was consequently little question until a collection in the Geneva Herbarium (Leblond 194), which had been identified as this species, was studied. There were enough similarities and differences to suggest that Aublet’s material at the British Museum should be compared with this also. I am indebted to W. T. Stearn for his careful comparison of a leaflet of the Leblond collection and one from Cowan 39384, which represents quite well the second element, with the Aublet sheet. It is on the basis of his comments and what I have been able to deduce otherwise that I have fixed the application of the name S. guianensis. The Leblond collection represents a distinct but related species from which it is readily separable by the glabrous inner surfaces of the calyx.
