Discussion:

Earlier authors, including Bentham in the Flora Brasiliensis, confused this species with S. benthamiana, which it resembles very closely. In addition to its smooth fruits, S. laevicarpa is also different from its nearest relative by the smooth, umbonate buds; the buds in S. benthamiana are distinctly verruculose and not at all umbonate and its fruits are conspicuously lamellate-ridged.
