Synonyms:

Swartzia macrostachya var. kuhlmannii (Hoehne) R.S.Cowan
Description:

Description - Subscandent shrub or tree with the leaflets 7-10-jugate, lanceolate to oblong-lanceolate, the base rounded, the apex acute, tomentose beneath; bracts caducous, narrowly ovate, 4-6 mm long, densely pubescent externally, the bracteoles inserted at the pedicel-apex, ca 2 mm long; buds oval in outline, ca 12 mm long and 9 mm diameter; larger stamens 6-13, usually 6, glabrous; ovary ca 7 mm long.

Discussion:

The relatively large, ovate to elliptic leaflets of S. macrostachya serve to distinguish it from its near relatives, of which S. flaemingii is certainly the closest. Var. kuhlmannii is quite distinct from the other varieties comprising S. macrostachya by its glabrous androecium comprised of 6-13 larger stamens instead of four in the other varieties; it also has larger buds, differently shaped bracts (which are caducous), and a rounded instead of oblate petal-blade. The other varieties differ primarily in number of pairs of leaflets, and the size of the buds and the ovary.
