Description - Shrub to small tree 2-10 m tall, the trunk ca 7 cm diameter, the branchlets glabrous, or puberulous and glabrescent; stipules caducous to persistent, 1.5-3(-12) mm long, 1-2 mm wide, subulate, glabrous or strigulose externally; petioles canaliculate to sub-marginate on the upper surface, stipellate apically, the stipels to 3 mm long, (0.5-) 1.5-3(-6.5) cm long, glabrous to strigulose or puberulous, the rachis 7.5-13(-18) cm long, canaliculate to slightly marginate, stipellate at each pair of leaflets, glabrous to strigulose or puberulous; leaflets (1-) 2- or 3-(rarely 4-) jugate, the petiolules 1.5-3 mm long, glabrous to puberulous, the blades elliptic to narrowly elliptic and elliptic-ovate, the lowest pair often deciduous and tending to be smaller, 5-16 cm long, 2.5-6 cm wide, the other pairs 8.5-26.5 cm long, 3-9.5 cm wide, the base of all the leaflets narrowed but finally truncate-obtuse or rounded-obtuse, the apex acute to acuminate, often bluntly so, glabrous or sparsely puberulous on the costa on the lower surface and glabrescent, the costa and primary veins plane to slightly salient on the upper surface of the leaflets, salient beneath; inflorescence a simple raceme or, more often, a simple to compound panicle of racemes, (6-) 15-20(-28) cm long, usually terminal but infrequently ramigerous, the axes glabrous to minutely strigulose or densely puberulous, the bracts deciduous to persistent, triangular-ovate to lanceolate, 1-2 mm long, 0.4-1 mm wide, minutely strigulose or puberulous externally, glabrous within, the bracteoles lacking; pedicels (6.5-) 10-15(-25) mm long, sparsely stigulose minutely or puberulous; buds globose, puberulous or sparsely strigulose minutely, (9-) 10 mm diameter; calyx opening in two hemispheric, reflexed segments, these sometimes secondarily divided apically, pubescent like the buds externally, glabrous within, persistent with the fruit; petal yellow, glabrous, the claw (4-)6-8 mm long, the blade broadly ovate to oblate, the base more or less cordate, 3.5-4(-5) cm long, 3-5.5 cm wide; larger stamens 3-11, glabrous, the filaments 15-23 mm long, the anthers 2-4 mm long, 0.5-1 mm wide, oblong, the pollen grains globose, 23-30 n diameter, the smaller stamens numerous, the glabrous filaments 8-14.5(-23) mm long, the pollen 30-38 /ti diameter; gynoecium glabrous, the stigma capitellate, obliquely oriented on the style, the style 3.5-9(-12) mm long, the ovary arcuate-fusiform, 10-15.5 mm long, 1-1.5 mm wide, the gynophore 7-11.5 mm long; fruit glabrous, moniliform, 10-22 cm long, 1.5-2 cm wide, 1-5-seeded, the stipe 20-30 mm long; seeds dark black-brown, shiny.

Discussion:

S. trianae is at once recognizable by the two-parted calyx, the paniculate-racemose inflorescence, and the obliquely oriented stigma. It is perhaps most nearly related to S. haughtii but differs by the characters listed, as well as in having fewer pairs of leaflets.
