Description - Tree 10-15 m tall, the branchlets dark-brown velutinous; stipules caducous, rigid, ovate, ca 4 mm long and 3 mm wide, densely pilose-velutinous externally, glabrous within; petioles (1-)3.5-4.5 cm long, terete and stipellate apically, velutinous, the rachis 10-15 cm long, stipellate, marginate to narrowly alate, the wing rigid, 5 mm wide, velutinous except on the wing; leaflets 3- or 4-jugate, the petiolules ca 3 mm long, densely pilose-velutinous, the blades rigid, those of the lowermost oval-oblong to oblong and smaller, 4-8 cm long, 2.5-4 cm wide, those of the other leaflets 9.5-15 cm long, 3.5-6 cm wide, oblong to elliptic-oblong, the base of all the leaflets rounded-obtuse, the apex bluntly acute, velutinous on the costa on the upper surface, generally tomentose beneath, the venation conspicuous, impressed above, very strongly salient beneath; inflorescence racemose or panicled-racemose, ramuligerous to axillary, 19-30 cm long, the axis dark-brown velutinous, the bracts deciduous, 5-6 mm long, 4 mm wide, ovate, velutinous externally, the bracteoles 4-6 mm long, narrowly oblong, velutinous externally; pedicels 15-20 mm long, densely velutinous; buds oval in outline, ca 11 mm long and 9 mm diameter, densely velutinous; calyx segments 4, thick and woody, velutinous on the outer surfaces, glabrous within; petal oblate, the blade ca 12 mm long and 20 mm wide, the base cordate, villose externally; larger stamens several, glabrous, the filaments ca 18 mm long, the anthers ca 2 mm long, oval, the smaller stamens glabrous, the filaments 9 mm long; stigma capitellate; style 9.5-12 mm long, glabrous; ovary densely pilose, ca 14 mm long and 2 mm wide, arcuate oblong narrowly; gynophore 7-8 mm long, sparingly velutinous; fruit not seen.

Discussion:

As noted by Harms, the affinities of this species are with S. grandifolia, but the latter has non-bullulate leaflets, a sericeous ovary, and a pubescent gynophore; there is also a strong geographic disjunction separating the two species.
