Description:

Author: Benjamin M. Torke

Type: Panama. Bocas del Toro: Isla Colón, Vicinity of Chiriqui Lagoon, 18 Oct 1940 (fl), H. von Wedel 1224 (holotype: MO; isotypes: GH, US).

Description: Tree, to 12 m; young branchlets glabrous or minute-strigulose. Stipules triangular, 0.5-1.6 mm, minute-strigulose externally. Leaves imparipinnate, with 1-2 pairs of lateral leaflets; petioles often bicarinate or weakly winged above, 2.3-6.7 cm, glabrous to sparsely minute-strigulose; rachis often bicarinate or weakly marginate above, minutely stipellate at leaflets, 4-13.1 cm, glabrous to sparsely minute-strigulose; petiolules 4.7-8.2 mm, glabrous or minute-strigulose; leaflet blades membranous, ovate, elliptic, or obovate, the terminal 16.5-31.5 x 7-11.3 cm, the lateral 12.5-25.5 x 6.5-10.2 cm, base acute to obtuse, apex acuminate, acumen pointed, upper surface glabrous or nearly so, often minutely puberlous on midrib and secondary veins, lower surface glabrous to sparsely minute-strigulose, midrib and other veins impressed above, salient below. Inflorescences borne on defoliate portion of branches; axes 7-15 cm, minute-strigulose; bracts triangular, 0.3-1 mm, minute-strigulose abaxially, estipulate; pedicels 9-13.5 mm, sparsely to moderately minute-strigulose; bracteoles lacking; flower buds globose, 6.5-8 mm and equally wide. Calyx glabrous internally, glabrous to sparsely minute-strigulose externally; segments 4-5, ca. 5-9 mm. Corolla lacking. Stamens glabrous, arranged in two groups; those of the abaxial group ca. 10, filaments 13-19 mm, anthers oblong-elliptic in outline, 1.8-2.4 mm; those of the adaxial group numerous, more than 50, filaments 7-14 mm, anthers elliptic in outline, 1-1.5 mm. Gynoecium glabrous, stipe ca. 5-6 mm; ovary acuate and narrowly oblong-fusiform in outline, ca. 10 x 1.3 mm; style terminal, ca. 5 mm; stigma capitellate. Fruits, glabrous; stipe 8-13 mm; body moniliform, 10-20 x 1.4-1.8 cm, seed chambers narrowly oblong, base and apex attenuate. Seeds 1-several, oblongoid, ca. 4.6 x 0.8 cm; aril obliquely covering basal half of seed.

Common Names: No common names have been recorded.

Distribution: Known only from the vicinity of Laguna Chiriqui in Bocas del Toro Province, Panama.

Ecology: Swartzia nuda occurs in lowland tropical moist forest. Nothing is known about its pollination or dispersal ecology.

Phenology: Flowers are known from February, October and November, mature fruits from February and September.

Taxonomic Notes: Swartzia nuda belongs to the Central American apetalous clade of Swartzia section Terminales. Within this group, it is characterized by having only one or two pairs of lateral leaflets, and unwinged rachis, relatively small stipules and large flowers, with an extremely elongate, glabrous gynoecium and moniliform fruits with very elongate subchambers and seeds. It is probably most closely related to the Costa Rican species S. zeledonensis, but the two species appear to be morphologically distinct (see discussion under S. zeledonensis).

Uses: No uses have been recorded.

Etymology: The specific epithet apparently refers to the glabrous gynoecium.

Conservation status: The conservation status of Swartzia nuda may be of concern. Although it occurs in a part of Panama that has been poorly inventoried by botanists, the species appears to have a small range, and has probably experienced significant loss of populations due to ongoing deforestation in the region. As of 2010, the species has been collected on fewer than 10 occasions, only two of these subsequent to the initial collections by von Wedel in the early 1940s. It has been recently documented from the Bosque Protector Palo Seco Conservation Area (Aizprúa & Alvarez B4294; Aizprúa et al. 2832-RA).
