Description:

Description - Tree 4-10 m tall; stipules (2-)4.5-6 mm long, glabrous; petioles 4.5-10(-20) mm long, glabrous or sparingly strigulose minutely on the costa and glabrescent; rachis 25-90 mm long; leaflets glabrous; larger stamens 4-8, the pollen of all the stamens globose, ca 26 µ diameter; gynoecium and fruit glabrous.

Discussion:

Several sheets of the Sellow collection annotated by Vogel as S. pulchra have been studied and there can be no question of the identity of that species with var. elegans.

Swartzia myrtifolia differs from the related species S. simplex and S. guatemalensis principally in the number of pairs of leaflets. Both relatives have 1-3-foliolate leaves and those of S. myrtifolia are 5-9-foliolate. The leaflets are usually acuminate with the tip more or less retuse in the present species.

The varieties of S. myrtifolia are quite similar to one another, differing principally in the presence or absence of pubescence on the leaflets, on the gynoecium, and on the fruit. Var. elegans differs from the others in its smaller number of larger stamens, and its restriction to southeastern Brazil.
