Description:

Description - Tree 10-25 m tall, the branchlets densely strigulose minutely; stipules persistent, 0.4-1 mm long and wide, triangular, minutely strigulose externally; petioles terete, minutely strigulose sparingly and glabrescent, (6-)10-18 mm long; rachis (20-)40-60(-73) mm long, terete, minutely strigulose, glabrescent; leaflets 2-4-jugate, often lacking the odd, terminal leaflet, the petiolules canaliculate, 2-4 mm long, strigulose, glabrescent, the blades 3-9 cm long, 2-3.5 cm wide, ovate, lanceolate, or elliptic, the base rounded but finally acute or obtuse, the apex caudate-acuminate, the tip truncate and retuse or only obtuse, the upper surface glabrous, beneath minutely strigulose and glabrescent, the venation subobscure, the costa impressed on the upper surface and salient beneath, the primary veins plane on both surfaces; inflorescences axillary, few-flowered, ca 10 or fewer in each inflorescence, 4.5-9.5 cm long, the axis minutely strigulose, the bracts deciduous to persistent, 1-1.5 mm long, triangular, minutely strigulose externally, glabrous within, the bracteoles arising in the upper part of the pedicels, persistent, 1-2 mm long, lanceolate, acute, minutely strigulose externally, glabrous within; pedicels 12-23 mm long, minutely strigulose; buds globose, 7-10 mm diameter, verruculose; flowers fragrant; calyx segments 4 or 5, more or less verruculose, densely strigulose externally, glabrous within; petal white, sericeous externally at least at the base, glabrous within, the claw 3-4 mm long, the blade oblate, basally truncate, 12-15 mm long, 20 mm wide; larger stamens 4, glabrous, yellow, the filaments 15-20 mm long, the anthers oblong, ca 1.5 mm long, 0.8-1 mm wide, the smaller stamens glabrous, yellow, the filaments 7-15 mm long; stigma truncate; style ca 5 mm long, glabrous or nearly so; ovary 5-6.5 mm long, 1.5-2.5 mm wide, laterally sericeous but otherwise glabrous and glabrescent, the gynophore 8.5-13 mm long, sparingly strigulose, glabrescent; mature fruit not seen, immature ones narrowly oblong-elliptic.

Discussion:

From a cursory glance one might be inclined to look for this species among those with axillary, few-flowered inflorescences; however, the bracteoles on the pedicels and the nature of the bracts clearly indicate its true affinities with the species of sect. Swartzia. The relative proportions of the style to the ovary associate it with S. polyphylla, although it is abundantly distinct from that species. It is certainly not very closely related to S. laevicarpa, or any of its relatives, as suggested by Schery. The laterally pubescent ovary of S. parvifolia, its smaller leaflets which occur in fewer pairs per leaf, and the form of the inflorescence separate it from its nearer kin.
