Description:

Description - Tree 10-30 m tall, the branchlets velutinous; stipules caducous, oblate, velutinous externally, glabrous within; petioles terete, 3.5-5.5 cm long, tomentose-velutinous, the rachis 10-22.5 cm long, tomentose-velutinous; leaflets 4- or 5-jugate, the petiolules 3-5 mm long, tomentose-velutinous, the blades 8.5-21 cm long, 3.5-8 cm wide, oblong, oblong-elliptic, or elliptic, the base rounded, obtuse or subobtuse, the apex abruptly acute or acuminate, glabrous on the upper surface, the under surface strigulose, tessellate and glaucous, the costa impressed, the primary veins plane on the upper surface of the leaflets, salient beneath; inflorescence cauligerous or ramigerous, rarely axillary, 9-15.5 cm long, the axis velutinous, the bracts deciduous, oblong to broadly oval, 5.5-10 mm long, 3-8 mm wide, strigulose-velutinous externally, glabrous within; pedicels (5-) 10-13 mm long, velutinous; buds glabrous, slightly apiculate, 8-9 mm diameter, densely strigulose; calyx segments 5, persistent, coriaceous, densely strigulose externally, glabrous within; petal villose-sericeous externally, glabrous within, the claw 4-7 mm long, the blade oblate, truncate to cordate basally, 15-20 mm long, 20-30 mm wide; larger stamens 2-6, the filaments ca 18.5 mm long, glabrous to sparingly villosulose, the anthers 2 mm long, 1 mm wide, oblong, glabrous, the smaller stamens glabrous, the filaments 14-15 mm long; stigma capitellate; style 4-9.5 mm long, sericeous basally; ovary 6-7 mm long, 2.5-3 mm wide, oblong, sericeous; gynophore 4-8 mm long, sericeous; fruit oval in outline, 1-seeded, densely brown-sericeous, 8 cm long, 4.5 cm wide, laterally ridged, the ridges low and obliquely oriented.

Discussion:

There is a tendency for the Brazilian collections to have shorter pedicels, broader bracts, and the filaments of the larger stamens sparingly pubescent; the similarities of this material to that of var. cardonae are so numerous, however, that it seems better to consider the Brazilian material as belonging to the same taxon.
