Description:
Species Description - Glabrate, armed or unarmed shrub or tree. Leafstalk 3.5-8 cm; pinnae 2 (-3) pairs, or sometimes one pair plus 1-2 leaflets from primary leafstalk; leaflets (1-)2-3 pairs, petioluled, obovate, truncate or emarginate at apex, 2-3.5 cm, 1.2-1.4 r, thick, shiny above, nerved, light and obscurely punctate below. Stipules not seen. Flowers numerous in terminally congested axillary racemes often constituting a panicle. Pedicels .6-1 cm, jointed at apex; calyx lobes unequal, imbricate, the outer cucullate in bud, 7-9 mm at anthesis; petals yellow, subequal, ca 1 cm; filaments approximating petals, villous. Legume indehiscent, oblong, flat when immature, becoming turgid and impressed between seeds at maturity, 4-9 cm long, 1.2-2 cm wide, margins drawn out into a wing. Seeds (l-)-few.

Discussion:
Nicarago vesicaria (L.) Britt. 8c Rose (1930) CN 2n = 24 (Atchison, 1951). The few U.S. specimens are unarmed whereas most Antilles ones have short, straight, internodal prickles.
