Description:
Species Description - Glabrous shrub or small tree, (1.5-)2-4(rarely-12) m tall; trunk to 15 cm diam.; bark light. Branchlets terete to subangular, striate. Leaves narrowly to broadly oblong, or oblong-lanceolate, apex acuminate for 4-8 cm, tip blunt, base cuneate, very base acute or mostly obtuse, chartaceous to subcoriaceous, olive-green and rather dull in dry state, neither tuberculate nor wrinkled, laticifers well visible beneath, variable in size even in the same specimen (forms with smaller leaves similar to those of H. acuminata, which however, has a different fruit), (8-) 10— 20(-30) x (3-)6-8(-11) cm, edge a little revolute, midrib plane or somewhat raised above, prominent beneath, lateral nerves 8-10(-12, -16) pairs curved-ascending, obscurely inarching before the edge, plane above, raised beneath, reticulation of the oblique veins and veinlets rather dense, a little prominent on both surfaces, or often less so beneath; petiole striate lengthwise, more or less rugulose, (6-)10-15(-30) mm long. Flowers few per bracteolate axillary glomerule; pedicels 1-2 mm long. Petals 4(-5), deltoid-oblong, practically glabrous inside, 2.5 mm long. Stamens 10; filaments liguliform. Drupe (sub)globose, vertically many-ribbed, dark blue to blackish at full maturity, (6-)8-10 mm diam. Fruit-calyx subquadrate-orbicular, spreading or finally more or less reflexed, subcoriaceous, bright red, shallowly or hardly lobed, 2(-3) cm diam. when expanded; peduncle 8-12 mm long.
